Teacher's Guide to Classroom Pets

Birds for the classroom

Birds are a great way to introduce science, the environment—even vocabulary—to your students. Because of the wide variety of species available, you're sure to find a good match for your class; the key is to decide what you want your students to learn.

Parakeets, for instance, like to be with you as much as possible and require at least one hour or more of daily interaction. Canaries, on the other hand, are more solitary.

Birds need more hands-on attention than other Specialty Pets, largely because of their specific feeding and habitat-cleaning requirements. Be sure to bring your bird home each night.
