1. What is the difference between a therapeutic pet food and a typical over-the-counter Pet food?
Therapeutic pet foods are formulated to address specific medical conditions that can develop in pets. Over-the-counter foods are formulated to meet the needs of healthy pets during various life stages. Therapeutic foods are only available through your veterinarian, while over-the-counter foods are available at pet specialty stores, feed stores, grocery outlets, etc. in addition to your veterinarian.
2. What is a MedCard and why do I have to have one in order to purchase a therapeutic Pet food?
A MedCard is a card (standard business card size) that Banfield issues to give Pet Parents authorization to purchase therapeutic foods through PetSmart. A MedCard is required to purchase therapeutic pet foods to ensure that your pet receives the food their veterinarian has recommended to meet their specific nutritional needs.
3. My regular veterinarian does not require any type of MedCard for me to purchase therapeutic foods from their clinic so why do I need one to purchase from PetSmart/Banfield?
A MedCard is required to purchase therapeutic Pet foods at PetSmart/Banfield because of their unique relationship. The person who checks out your purchases at PetSmart is not an employee of Banfield, and has not been trained on the unique qualities of therapeutic foods. The MedCard is required as a safety check to ensure that your Pet receives the food your veterinarian has recommended.
4. I have a "prescription" for a therapeutic pet food from my veterinarian so why do I need a MedCard?
If you are not a regular Banfield client you will need a prescription from your veterinarian in order to receive a MedCard. A MedCard must be issued because it contains a more complete record of the food your pet requires as well as your individual contact information. The MedCard is accepted at all PetSmart locations where a Banfield is currently located and the consistency of the MedCard system ensures that your Pet always receives the proper nutrition your veterinarian has recommended.
5. My MedCard has recently expired. How do I get a new one?
If a Banfield veterinarian initially recommended a therapeutic pet food for your Pet then simply call them as they may want to schedule an examination to ensure that your pet still requires the original food. If a non-Banfield veterinarian recommended the therapeutic pet food then please contact them directly for the necessary steps to have them issue another prescription for your pet's food.
6. Why do I need to have a written order ("prescription" or "script") from my veterinarian in order to purchase a therapeutic pet food?
Therapeutic pet foods are formulated to address specific medical conditions that your pet can develop. Therapeutic foods are only available through your veterinarian to ensure that your pet always receives the best nutrition to address its individual therapeutic needs. Prolonged use of some foods may be inappropriate for your pet and your veterinarian is the most qualified in making nutritional recommendations as it relates to your Pet's health.
7. Can I purchase my other Pet's medications with a MedCard?
No. MedCards are only issued for the purchase of therapeutic foods.
8. Can a client with a MedCard use it at any PetSmart?
A MedCard issued by Banfield is valid at any PetSmart location with a Banfield hospital. The MedCard has to be current with the appropriate information i.e. date, client name, product, patient, doctor, instructions, quantity, expiration, refills, hospital address and phone number.
9. Can therapeutic pet foods be sold when the Banfield hospital is closed?
Therapeutic pet foods are available for purchase only with a valid MedCard or new veterinary written order. If you have a new prescription from a non-Banfield veterinarian you will be asked to complete a Banfield MedCard Information form and provide the prescription to the PetSmart associate. If requested, Banfield will mail your MedCard directly to the address provided on the information sheet. However, you will, be allowed to purchase your first bag with a prescription and before the MedCard is actually issued to you.
10. What if my pet won't eat the therapeutic food purchased?
Therapeutic foods are offered with a 100 percent money back guarantee for taste and quality. Before you stop feeding any therapeutic food please check with your veterinarian. They may have ideas on how to get your pet to eat the recommended therapeutic food.
11. My veterinarian recommends that I feed a food that Banfield/PetSmart does not carry. Can you special order it for me?
Check with either a Banfield team member or a PetSmart associate on the availability of any therapeutic food. Some foods may be able to be special ordered however not all therapeutic foods are available through PetSmart.
