Seed diets tend to be high in fat. Veterinarians now recommend feeding a fortified pellet diet with vegetables, fruits and treats to supplement.
Your bird’s diet can be made up of 20 percent vegetables, including dark leafy greens, zucchini, broccoli, squash, shredded carrots, snow peas, parsley, cucumber and romaine. Never feed your bird avocado; it can be toxic.
Fruit can make up 5 percent of your bird’s diet, including papaya, banana, melon, mango, orange, kiwi, and apple (with seeds removed). On a daily basis you should only feed enough fruit and vegetables to be consumed in four hours; all uneaten food should be cleaned out after four hours to prevent spoilage.
Occasionally treat your bird to cooked pasta or brown rice, beans, barley, oats or legumes. You can offer these types of treats about once a week, to make up 5 percent of his diet and only enough to be consumed in four hours.
Make sure your bird always has a cuttlebone or mineral block. Ask a store associate to help you find the best vitamin or mineral supplement for you specific species of bird.
Water should be refreshed daily.
